Hollywood Red Carpet Theme

When my daughter and I started the real work of planning her Quince, we knew that if we found a great theme it would make the planning easier. Initially she did not want a themed event but we had seen how sucessful they could be so we did a lot of brainstorming. Over the months leading up to her 14th birthday we tossed ideas back and forth and finally decided on a Hollywood Red Carpet theme. Then I panicked, how do you do Red Carpet without spending tons of money? When you think about Hollywood and Red Carpet you think glamour, luxury, and extravagance. Of course by now she was totally excited about the theme. So I did a whole lot of Internet searching on the Golden Age of Hollywood, I looked at old photos just to get some ideas. What kind of venue would have that old Hollywood flavor?

The Venue

During my Internet research I had seen a lot of references to the old Chinese theatre in Hollywood. That was the kind of venue I would love to have, something historic and full of character. I remembered that locally we had a historic Fox Theatre that had recently been restored, they had refurbished it but had stuck to the original design and had restored the furniture, lighting and even restored the painted ceiling. They had modernized their technical equipment for sound and video, and reopened the theatre on a limited basis to the public. I decided to see if the theatre had a website so I could view some pictures and get some ideas. Then I saw it, a link for "Building Rental".

I promptly scheduled a tour and fell in love. The theatre was perfect. Building Rental included not only the use of the auditorium but the use of the entire theatre. I had use of the main auditorium for the Ceremony and Reception, (they could remove some of the theatre seating and place a dance floor) The lighting and sound could be handled by their technicians while allowing our DJ and Videographer to plug into theatre quality House sound.

Backstage we had dressing rooms with lighted mirrors for both boys and girls, and two individual Star Dressing Rooms. There was a green room with a Refrigerator where we could keep refreshments for the Court, for the guests the concessions were open for drinks and snacks. The court was given VIP access to the backstage that was restricted to just the court. And they would all arrive by limo to walk the red carpet when the Reception began.

And it was beautiful, everywhere you looked the theatre was beautiful, a wonderful backdrop for photos and video. And because it was a historic theatre it required no decoration. My only outside costs for the venue were the rental of a red carpet and the dance floor. It was perfect. And one of the coolest details was that they were going to put whatever we wished on the Marque for the Night of the Event, we also had the use of the poster cases to create custom posters for the outside of the theatre. Now I realize that not every city has a historic theatre that can be rented, and by having the theatre it made my job easier but I will list below some of the little details that can create that Hollywood atmosphere.

Making a Hollywood Entrance

What do you think of when you think of Hollywood? I think of Paparazzi, and Award Shows, and Movie Premiers and Walking the Red Carpet. These are all relatively easy to do at your event. You can contact almost any party supply place to rent a red carpet and velvet ropes to rope it off. Ask for a handful of volunteers to pose as paparazzi and take pictures. With today's technology and digital camera this will cost your guests nothing but to bring their own cameras and flash away. This is also a nice way to get additional candid shots of your event from those individuals that acted as paparazzi. This will be a lot of fun for them and a great way to make them feel included. Also guests will enjoy posing on the red carpet for their own photos throughout the night.

Now you are ready for the Red Carpet Arrivals. The easiest way to accomplish this is to rent a limo, if you are feeling extravagant you can hire a car club or multiple limos, but in my case we rented a single 10 person limo that carried about three couples at a time. The limo would circle the block and the chauffeur would open the door so that one couple at a time could get out. The court members would then strut down the red carpet feeling like movie stars, some even signed autographs. This part of the evening was very high energy we had music pumping in the background and the guest were going crazy taking pictures. The Quinceanera and her escort were the last to arrive on the Red Carpet, by then the entire court was outside with all the guests waiting for her big entrance. The crowd went crazy...

Souvenir Tickets

One of the ways to make a real statement is to create original invitations, posters, and programs for your event. Custom work does not need to be expensive, in fact it can save you money. For my daughters Quinceanera I wanted to create an invitation that was in keeping with the theme. I looked online for ticket invitations and found several at party sites, they were relatively inexpensive compared to traditional invitations but were not very original.

So I did an Internet search on ticket printing and found a professional printing service online, I contacted them with my ideas and they had a graphic artist create a design for me. I provided him with a picture of my daughter, a picture of the fox I had taken at night and he created this awesome invitation for me. I only had to pay for his design time which was only two hours. I purchased 900 tickets with envelopes and it cost me less than $200. If you are planning an event you know that traditional invitations with envelopes are usually about $5 an invitation. You can see the savings. The tickets also served as souvenir for the guests and court for a keepsake of the event.

Souvenir Posters

You can also have custom posters made that you create yourself using photo editing software like Photoshop. Or you can even create posters on the photo tab of the Walgreen's website under photo gifts. These can be simple or complex. My original idea was to recreate teen movie posters using my daughter and her Court as the movie cast members. With everything I had to do I never finished that project, but we were fortunate that our Photographer created some original movie posters with her as a star using some pictures he had taken of her a few months before.

Souvenir Programs

You can also create a souvenir program using a standard word processing software like Microsoft Word. These programs often provide templates for different types of documents that can be downloaded. Once downloaded you can edit the text and even the graphics relatively easily. Programs are a great way to give the guests a schedule of events as well as write some personal thank yous to everyone that has helped you bring the event together.

Grab Bags

Red Carpet events often include goodie bags for the guests and presenters. This is a fun way to give thank you gifts to your court. You can create Hollywood themed goodie bags that include a small gift and some memorabilia from the Event. Suggested contents could be Oscar trophies for the court, Bling for the girls like matching necklace and earring sets, movie candy, copies of the program, tickets and VIP passes. I included a Quinceanera soundtrack with music from every year of my daughter's life. Another idea is to give them a photo CD of pictures from the practices and events. You can put almost anything in the goodie bags.

Interviews & Photography

One way to make the guests feel special and have an extra treat for your party girl is to have the videographer do guest interviews. This is fun for the guests, and a great surprise for the guest of honor when she receives her video. Friends and family can also make videos statements and tell stories or just give some well wishes.
However you do it, your daughter is sure to feel like a Superstar! Have Fun!

Mardi Gras Theme

The year my daughter turned 13 was a big year for me. I knew that I had to beginning the real steps of planning her Quinceanera. Fortunately, we had some close family friends that were in the middle of getting ready for their daughter's Quinceanera. Just being part of her Quinceanera taught me so much and really helped me in my decision making when I planned my daughters.

My daughter and her best friend were asked to be part of Ariana's Quinceanera right before the first practice. We arrived to practice on first day to what looked like a BBQ/house party, there were 30+ kids walking around eating hot dogs and posole, and what seemed like 30+ adults hanging out inside and outside.

Once we came inside the house we saw the command center. There at the large square dining table sat the Mother of the Quinceanera and several family members and padrinos, It was a work station, here they had several glue guns, eye masks, feathers, beads, ribbons, and decorative gemstones. We were making party favors.

Decorations & Party Favors

The decorations for this event were all done in Purple, Green, and Gold which are the traditional colors for Mardi Gras. Purple represents justice; green, faith; and gold, power. In addition there were favors that were that were hand made specifically for her court of honor. These included the special masquerade masks they wore as they were presented for the Court Waltz. They Quinceanera had her own mask as well as an elaborate set of Mardi Gras Beads.

Other decorations and favors included the following:

  • Special Mardi Gras Face Masks for the Damas
  • Mardi Gras Face Masks for the Guests
  • Lots and Lots of Mardi Gras Beads
In addition to the Mardi Gras themed favors they had some traditional favors like mini rosaries given at the ceremony, chocolate coins (in mardi gras colors) candies, and wallet sized pictures in frames of the quinceanera for the guests. The guest were all greeted by the Quinceanera and her family as they came in. They were also given their own Mardi Gras beads to wear and to keep as a party favor. The beads were a big hit, and everywhere you looked you saw guests and court members taking pictures with their beads and masks. This created a very festive and playful atmosphere, it was great fun.

So What's your Theme?

When I was growing up Quinceanera's and Sweet Sixteens were pretty much all the same. I mean of course there was differences in choice of music and venue. But overall you were going to see the same basic setup, program, dance, food, and timeline. In addition everyone pretty much had a white dress, 7 or 14 couples, and the same style of invitations. Today Quinceanera's are much more unique. With the variety of dress colors and styles, music, decorations, and themes.

I went to my first themed Quinceanera about three years ago. A close family friend was throwing a Mardi Gras themed Event. As part of the the Quinceanera my daughter had to go to weekly practices, and the adults that came for the food and conversation helped with small tasks like making decorations and party favors. Not only was this time fun, but it opened my eyes to the benefits of a themed event. The major benefit of a themed event is it can answer many of the questions for you, for example:

- What type of Venue Should I Choose
- What type of Decorations
- What are my Colors
- What type of Dress should I get, and what type of dresses/suits for my court
- What Should my Party Favors be

Now there are a million themes out there, and many of them are over done. For example most Quinceanera's and Sweet Sixteens I attend have a princess theme. It is hard at this point to make that unique. But there are many exciting themes to choose from. If you are looking for ideas think of your favorite movies, and books, and see if there is enough visual stimulation to make a good theme. On the other hand you can choose not to have a theme and have a traditional event. These are so rare now that they are almost unique.

Whatever you choose, your event is sure to be a hit if it reflects you and your interests. In other posts I will talk about some of the creative themes I have seen, and how they were executed. I will also post some ideas on some of my favorite themes as well as how I used my daughter's theme to plan her Quinceanera, and how I am currently planning my daughter's best friends Sweet Sixteen with the use of her Theme.

Christian Sweet Sixteen Ceremony

Ceremony originally written by Adrian Olivas

GIFT LIST

1. A Bible (preferably a Study Bible )
2. Baby shoes (They look better if they are white satin).
3. A ring (either with a birthstone or a small diamond, etc.)
4. Watch (preferably a dressy one)
5. A tiara
6. A rose bud, a rose in half-bloom and a rose in complete bloom.
7. A small and decorative perfume decanter.
8. A parasol that has been decorated to match the color scheme.
9. Sixteen Candles and Candle Bases for Candle lighting Ceremony
10. Each attendant may carry a white long-stem rose, which they can give to her at the end of the ceremony. (Optional)

You may wish to begin the ceremony with a small explanation what the Sweet 16 represents. It was originally begun to introduce a young lady in society as ready for courtship. However, evangelicals have changed the meaning to be a time when a young lady dedicates and commits her life to the Lord publicly.

A ceremony is so much more beautiful when it is interspersed with music. For the processional someone may sing or play music that has a special meaning to the young lady. The young lady may also want to sing a song at this time, or a family member.

CEREMONY

Pastor: Beloved in Jesus Christ, we have gathered here, in God’s presence to give thanks for the sixteen years of life God has given Miss ________________________. We are glad that she decided to celebrate her birthday in the presence of God. The Psalmist says: "Because better is a day in your courts that a thousand outside of them. . .

This is a happy age, when young girls hold many dreams. But also it is a difficult age because it is at this age when a young lady becomes accountable for her spiritual life. From now on ________ you’ve ceased to be a little girl for you have become a young lady. Your parents have done what they can in rearing you; however, now you must begin to make decisions and get ready for a little more independence. It is during this time that you will need Jesus as your friend, counselor and above all as Savior.

Pastor: Since you have decided to celebrate your birthday in the presence of God and with his blessing, I with your Family and Friends will dedicate some items to you so that each time you see them you will always remember this joyous event. These are only symbols of that which is to come; that which will be in God’s presence one glorious day.

Pastor: (Take the Bible; and give it ). ___________, as a Christian you understand the importance of knowing the Word of God. It is the through the study of his word that you can begin to know and experience God's will for your life. It says in the bible that God's word never comes back void. This is a promise that through studying the word of God and practicing you faith in Christ will make you wise and strong while doing Christ's work in you. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the (man) young lady of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:14-17). God promises in Phillipians Chapter One that he (God) who has begun a work in you is faithful to complete it. May this book always be a lamp unto your feet and light unto your path.

Rose Ceremony (Women of three different ages representing the times of life)

(Mother – Brings the Rose Bud). This symbolizes your infancy. At this age you were innocent and unaware of sin. The Kingdom of God was yours without the need of salvation and repentance.

(Grandmother brings the rose in half-bloom). But, as you grew you began to experience the effects of man’s sinful nature in your life. At this age you had knowledge of right and wrong. At this age is when you began needing Christ as Savior and Lord

(Great Grandmother brings the rose in full bloom) And today, as this flower is in full bloom, beautiful and fragrant, so are you as you stand here today. But the Bible says of life, that it is as the grass, it flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone. Youthfulness is only a brief moment of time in life. All in life is pretense and the only important thing that is eternal is your soul. Keep it and guard it faithfully. And what better way to keep your life but by giving it to The Giver and Keeper of our days? He has promised you life eternal at His side.

Song:

(God Mother/Spiritual Mentor gives her the watch; place it on the left wrist) This watch will serve to remind you that the coming of the Lord is very near. With each second, minute, hour, and day that passes, remember that you must always be prepared because we do not know neither the day nor the hour when He will come for His Church. But as you await His coming, may you be able to say as the Psalmist: "Teach me to number my days aright, that I may gain a heart of wisdom." (Psalm 90:12).

(God Parents bring the parasol). This parasol will help you think on what the Lord has said "(My Glory) will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain" (Isaiah 4:6). When you find yourself in trouble or in danger may you always be able to say: "You are my refuge and my shield." (Psalm 119:114). Stand steadfast on this truth. God has given us more than 33,000 promises and all can be yours. Every promise, every verse, every line.

(God Parents bring the perfume; give it to her). This bottle of perfume symbolizes the prayers and worship the saints offer to the Lord. Your life should not only glorify God but it must be used to win souls for Him "For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other the fragrance of life. . . “(2 Cor. 2:15;16). The proverb writer said that perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the psalmist confirms this saying: "May my prayer be set before you like incense." (Psalm 141:2). May you always please the Lord with your life and with your prayers.
Song:

(Parents bring the shoes) These shoes symbolize your daily walk. When you were a little girl, I would take you where I wanted. You did not decide where or when you would go. Today I have rendered to you a most important responsibility and you are accountable to God for each step that you take. Remember that God is always watching you. And what joy you shall feel if when the Lord comes you can say, "I have chosen the way of truth; I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes." (Psalm 119:30,59).

(Mother/God Parents brings the tiara and place it on her head). This crown is beautiful and radiant, but how much more glorious and beautiful will the crown which Jesus will give you on that day be? The Bible mentions a few crowns. Which ones do you want? The first crown promised is the crown of life. To obtain it the Lord says “be faithful till the end and I will give you the crown of life." For those that persevere He has promised “the incorruptible crown ", (1 Cor. 9:25). To those who long for His coming He has promised "the crown of righteousness", (2 Tim. 4:8). The Bible urges us to cling to our crown "I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown". Can you imagine how much more beautiful it will be when you stand before the Lord and lay your crown before Him and say thank you for redeeming me." (Rev. 4:8-10).

Verse, Promise, Candle Ceremony, and Song (family can choose whether to do a ring or candle ceremony, or even both)

(Parents bring the ring, place it on her right hand).
This ring symbolizes authority. You have authority because you belong to the family of God. When the prodigal son returned, his father placed a ring on his finger because he had returned to the family and once again he had the authority that belonged to family members. Thus you have authority over the enemy because you are a daughter of the King, Jesus. This ring will also help remind you of the infinite love of God. As this ring has no beginning or end by virtue of being a circle, thus the love of God has no beginning nor end . . . God has said, "I have loved you with an everlasting love." (Jer. 31:3). For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Jer 29:11 NLT)

Pastor: A ring can also symbolize a pact. I understand you have a promise which you will make publicly.

_______________: (She can sing her song or Promise and recite verse. Share what it means to be the kind of young woman God would like her to be, and then give her purity promise) This is a good time to give her testimony or talk about what it means to her to follow God.

Candle Lighting Ceremony

It is customary during a Sweet Sixteen Celebration to have a candle lighting ceremony. _________ will have several people come join her during this part of the ceremony that represent the light they are to her life. Each Candle has a special meaning and she will share that as she lights each one.

Pastor: The bible says in the Book of Matthew Chapter 5:14

You are the light of the world like a city on the hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead a lamp is placed on a stand where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way let your good deeds shine for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly father.

The bible tells us that we are to be the salt and light of the world... this is God telling us to share his light with all the world. _________ will pass the flame from her candle to one of yours as symbol of sharing the love of God with all of you. You in turn can share that love with your neighbors.

Pastor: (Ask the guests to stand with their candles). Next the young lady will offer her prayer of consecration. She may memorize Psalm 119:33-48 or write her own prayer.

Court Gift & Closing

Pastor: (Ask the attendants to stand at the altar). They can all present the Quinceañera with a single rose to her at the end of the ceremony Conclude the ceremony with a Blessing:
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.

Or the Irish Blessing:
May the road rise up to meet you.May the wind always be at your back.May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
